I recently started a service business that has a new concept. Therefore, I have to educate people about the business, which is fine. Do you suggest door-to-door marketing or cold calling? I've had some people tell me it's the way to grow a business, then others say most people would find it annoying, and that I should resort to a press release instead. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Dear MsImage,
Since you are starting a service business - you and your talents are the product. Since it is a "new concept", it seems as though that could make you a newsworthy talent or resource. The best way to reach a large amount of people with less effort and cost, is to become a local expert on your special talent. People trust people that write helpful columns, articles or who appear on TV or radio. My suggestion to you is to attend the upcoming telecircle meeting featuring Annie Jennings of Annie Jennings PR. She can help you know what you need to establish yourself as an expert. Then, if you do decide to do a cold-calling campaign- people will already know your name when you call.
Direct mail marketing can also be a great way to reach people in your area.
Since you have a new concept, educating people on the value of your service and why you are an expert is key. Here's a a step by step marketing approach you can follow:
1- educating people on the value of your service and why you are an expert
2- then give them a powerful reason why they must for their own good they must hire you,
3- then give them an incentive (like a 100% guarantee) to motivate them to leap,
4- then after they have given you business, congratulate them with a gift and an opportunity to get rewarded each time they refer a new customer to you.
If you treat your clients like royalty, then you can incentivize them to be a referring sales force for your business!
I personally agree that cold-calling is not a good approach, unless you absolutely love doing it. Time is money, so remember to use your time effectively.
Congratulations on your new business!
