I just started my own business and want to have a grand opening. I'm not an event planner, and have no idea how to plan the event so it isn't boring. Help!

Dear Tiffany,
Congratulations on your new business venture!
Depending on your business type, grand openings can vary in format, style, and schedule, but here are a few things you definitely need.
~Decide on a date(s)
~Decide on who are going the "notable people" attending such as the mayor, local radio/TV personality, etc. Make sure they will all attend the ceremony. Many times these kinds of people require a fee, or have a scheduler to screen requests.
~Partner with one or more local networking/professional organizations to help you market it.
~Partner with a local charity as a fundraiser - this will help both you and them.
~Assign/hire a person as Master of the Ceremony for announcements, etc.
~Prepare a list of the people you would like to invite.
~Research press release writing and send out a professional quality press release (or hire a PR firm).
~Try to organize some media participants, e.g. TV, radio stations, newspapers etc.
~Prepare poster and flyers and place them in appropriate places, schools, grocery stores, post offices and any place where there is a lot of foot traffic.
~Partner with your neighbors to promote your opening. Offer their customers a "free gift" from your store with every purchase they make from his store.
~Prepare invitations, and make sure you include these:
-name of the event,
-date and time,
-location, and
-name of the ribbon cutter and any other distinguished guests,
-RSVP information.
~Prepare event schedule: welcome and introductions, speeches, ribbon-cutting, recognition of contributors and closing.
~After mailing out the invitations make sure you keep track on RSVP replies,
~Find a large pair of scissors, you may rent one from a party rental store, also purchase an appropriate ribbon.
~Buy decorations.
~Arrange any activities that you may offer after the opening, like introducing the business place to the guests, snacks and drinks, prizes etc.
