July & August are the worst months for burglaries says the Insurance Information Institute. However, burglars won't find your home an "easy mark" if they are forced to work in the light, if they have to take a lot of time breaking in, or if they can't break in without making a lot of noise. Research shows that if it takes more than four or five minutes to break into a home, the burglar will go elsewhere.

The Institute has released valuable tips to help you reduce your risk of home invasions this summer, and they have come up with a great new home inventory tool that is absolutely free, so if your home is burglarized, you'll have an easier time sending in your claim and helping the police in locating your stolen goods.

MCAP Success Story - As you know, MIBN is the only association that offers assistance for those business owners seeking Minority Certification for their business. Marisa Caballero, who owns Marisa's Garden, who imports roses at wholesale prices from Columbia, went through the certification process and within a few weeks received her first corporate contract to provide roses for a casino event.

BEWARE OF THE CYBERSPACE RATS! Software programs called Remote-Access Trojans, a.k.a. RATs, secretly record your every keystroke and transmit passwords, account numbers and other personal informaiton to criminals. They are usually acquired through free online software, email greeting cards, games, images and pictures, and disreputable internet sites. Protect yourself with a few easy steps: Update your operating systems and Internet browser. How?

1 - Go to your operating systems company web site to find the latest system software, which may include fixes for security vulnerabilities. It's free to download these updates.

2- Install firewall, antispyware, and antivirus software.

3- Don't open emails or images from unfamiliar senders.

4- Never download files or images from questionalbe Internet sites.
